世界地球日(World Earth Day，4月22日)
活動(dòng)起源于美國。1970年4月22日，在美國民主黨參議員蓋洛德尼爾森(Gaylord Nelson)和哈佛大學(xué)學(xué)生丹尼斯海斯的倡議和組織下，美國數(shù)十萬群眾參與了聲勢浩大的“地球日”活動(dòng)，呼吁創(chuàng)造一個(gè)清潔、簡單、和平的生活環(huán)境。 作為現(xiàn)代環(huán)保運(yùn)動(dòng)的開端，“地球日”活動(dòng)推動(dòng)了多個(gè)國家環(huán)境法規(guī)的建立。
1990年4月22日，全球140多個(gè)國家、2億多人同時(shí)在世界各地舉行形式多樣的環(huán)境保護(hù)宣傳活動(dòng)，呼吁改善全球整體環(huán)境。這項(xiàng)活動(dòng)得到了聯(lián)合國的肯定。
2009年4月22日，第63屆聯(lián)合國大會(huì)一致通過決議，決定將今后每年的4月22日定為“世界地球日”。
20世紀(jì)90年代，“地球日”的發(fā)起人創(chuàng)立了“地球日網(wǎng)絡(luò)”組織，將全世界環(huán)保主義者聯(lián)合起來推動(dòng)“地球日”活動(dòng)的開展。 地球是人類的共同家園，但人類的活動(dòng)卻對(duì)地球造成了嚴(yán)重的破壞。生物賴以生存的森林、湖泊、濕地等正以驚人的速度消失;煤炭、石油、天然氣等不可再生能源因過度開采而面臨枯竭;能源燃燒排放的大量溫室氣體導(dǎo)致全球氣候變暖，由此引發(fā)的極地冰蓋融化、海平面上升等問題威脅到人類的生存發(fā)展。 保護(hù)地球資源環(huán)境、尋求可持續(xù)發(fā)展模式已刻不容緩。
在2009年“世界地球日”來臨之際，“地球日網(wǎng)絡(luò)(Earthday Network)”發(fā)起“綠色一代(GREEN GENERATION)”計(jì)劃，倡導(dǎo)人類社會(huì)經(jīng)濟(jì)發(fā)展向可持續(xù)模式轉(zhuǎn)變。該計(jì)劃呼吁公眾維護(hù)三條核心原則：消除人類對(duì)化石能源的依賴性，致力于可再生能源的開發(fā)利用，創(chuàng)造一個(gè)“無炭”的未來;承諾個(gè)人消費(fèi)習(xí)慣與可持續(xù)發(fā)展要求相符合;建立“綠色經(jīng)濟(jì)”，通過為貧困人群創(chuàng)造“綠色崗位”使其脫貧，并將全球教育體系轉(zhuǎn)變?yōu)榄h(huán)保型。
從20世紀(jì)90年代起，中國在每年的4月22日都舉辦“世界地球日”宣傳活動(dòng)，并根據(jù)當(dāng)年的情況確定活動(dòng)主題。
最初的地球日選擇在春分節(jié)氣，這一天在全世界的任何一個(gè)角落晝夜時(shí)長均相等，陽光可以同時(shí)照耀在南極點(diǎn)和北極點(diǎn)上，這代表了世界的平等，同時(shí)也象征著人類要拋開彼此間的爭議和不同，和諧共存。傳統(tǒng)上在很多國家都有慶祝春分節(jié)氣的傳統(tǒng)。早期聯(lián)合國也在每年的春分舉行世界地球日的活動(dòng)。
