Ted

  Ted

This is really a two-hour presentation I give to high school students, cut down to three minutes. And it all started one day on a plane, on my way to TED, seven years ago. And in the seat next to me was a high school student, a teenager, and she came from a really poor family.

And she wanted to make something of her life, and she asked me a simple little question. She said, "What leads to success?" And I felt really badly, because I couldnt give her a good answer. So I get off the plane, and I come to TED. And I think, jeez, Im in the middle of a room of successful people! So why dont I ask them what helped them succeed, and pass it on to kids? So here we are, seven years, 500 interviews later, and Im gonna tell you what really leads to success and makes TED-sters tick.

【 And the first thing is passion.】

Freeman Thomas says, "Im driven by my passion." TED-sters do it for love; they dont do it for money. Carol Coletta says, "I would pay someone to do what I do." And the interesting thing is: if you do it for love, the money comes anyway.

  【W(wǎng)ork!】

Rupert Murdoch said to me, "Its all hard work. Nothing comes easily. But I have a lot of fun." Did he say fun? Rupert? Yes! TED-sters do have fun working. And they work hard. I figured, theyre notworkaholics. Theyre workafrolics.

  【Good! 】

  精通

Alex Garden says, "To be successful put your nose down in something and get damn good at it." Theres no magic; its practice, practice, practice.

  【And its focus.】

Norman Jewison said to me, "I think it all has to do with focusing yourself on one thing."

  Norman Jewison

  【And push! 】

  強(qiáng)迫

David Gallo says, "Push yourself. Physically, mentally, youve gotta push, push, push." You gotta push through shyness and self-doubt. Goldie Hawn says, "I always had self-doubts. I wasnt good enough; I wasnt smart enough. I didnt think Id make it." Now its not always easy to push yourself, and thats why they invented mothers. (Laughter) Frank Gehry — Frank Gehry said to me, "My mother pushed me."

  【Serve!】

  服務(wù)

Sherwin Nuland says, "It was a privilege to serve as a doctor." Now a lot of kids tell me they want to be millionaires. And the first thing I say to them is: "OK, well you cant serve yourself; you gotta serve others something of value. Because thats the way people really get rich."

  【Ideas!】

  點(diǎn)子

TED-ster Bill Gates says, "I had an idea: founding the first micro-computer software company." Id say it was a pretty good idea. And theres no magic to creativity in coming up with ideas — its just doing some very simple things. And I give lots of evidence.

  【Persist!】

  堅(jiān)持

Joe Kraus says, "Persistence is the number one reason for our success." You gotta persist through failure. You gotta persist through crap! Which of course means "Criticism, Rejection, Assholes and Pressure." (Laughter) So, the big — the answer to this question is simple: Pay 4,000 bucks and come to TED. Or failing that, do the eight things — and trust me, these are the big eight things that lead to success. Thank you TED-sters for all your interviews!

To be or nor to be, that is a question. To succeed or to fail? How to succeed and how to achieve? These problems confuse many teenagers in nowadays.

We all have dreams, and we all work hard to realize them. But there will always be some problems and setbacks to stop the pace of advance. When they appear, what should we do? To stop or to go on? Mrs. Curie told us the answer. We all know that Mrs. Curie discovered radium, but how many people really know how hard she worked? At that time, there were many people disapprove of Mrs. Curie. Although she got over hundreds of difficulties, she still believed in herself and never gave up. Finally, she succeeded to discover radium. She proved that she was right by her continuous hard work and her strong spirit. We should learnfromMrs. Curie. She told us the truth through her own experiences that believe in yourself, you can do it! Never give up, face the difficulties with a smile, someday, you will be proud of yourself.

The key to success is confidence. It makes you brave, helps you get over the troubles, and brings motivation to you. For example, somebody always get nervous when they have an important speech, if they are in a nervous mood, the results are always terrible. But if they are confident to themselves, the results turn out to be better. Therefore, be confident, believe in yourself, keep smile in your facewhen comes to difficulties, and you will achieve more.

A young man asked Socrates the secret of Success. Socrates told the young man to meet him near the river the next morning.

They met. Socrates asked the young man to walk with him towards the river.

When the water got up to their necks, Socrates took the young man by surprise and ducked him into the water.

The man struggled to get out but Socrates was strong and kept him there until he started turning blue. The young man struggled hard and finally managed to get out and the first thing he did was to gasp and take deep breath.

Socrates asked, “What you wanted the most when you were there?” The man replied, “Air.”

Socrates said, “that’s the most secret to success. When you want success as badly as you wanted air, you will get it. There is no other secret.”
